News - Diss ByElection 27th June 2008

Local Conservatives have selected Eloise Ellis to fight the Diss By Election on June 27th 2008.

Introducing Eloise

On Friday 27th June there will be a by-election for South Norfolk Council as a result of the sad death from cancer of the well-known former Mayor Brian Clark-Taylor.

Things must move on and I am delighted to have been selected by local Conservatives to stand in his place and I hope that you will support me at the polls.

Conservatives are making real progress in South Norfolk and this year the incoming Conservatives froze council tax, one of only six authorities in the whole country to do so. It’s been done without cutting services and the new Tory Council has now been rated as ‘Excellent’ by the independent Audit Commission. It’s now officially the best council in Norfolk.

Local Conservatives have really focused on the things that you said you wanted sorted out, including a £400,000 investment in an Environmental Crimes Team given the tools to tackle fly-tipping, graffiti and grime. I’m sure you’ve seen them being active throughout Diss keeping the place neat and tidy.

But I can only help build on this and other successes if I’m elected and that means you need to vote.

Check your diary. Will you be able to get to the polling station to vote in person on Friday 27th June between 7am and 10pm? It’s the market day immediately following the Norfolk Show. Is there a risk that something could come up on the day that will prevent you from voting? Nowadays people lead busy lives but your vote is crucial.

About Eloise

Eloise is 29 and a resident of Diss where she is currently working towards a PhD in constitutional law following which she intends to pursue a future in academia.

Her family have lived in East Anglia for a number of years with her mother living locally since the late 1990s and she fully appreciates the benefits of living in this scenic town particularly after spending the first ten years of her career in London.

Since graduating from King’s College London with first class honours in Law in 2000, she has spent several years working as a political adviser/campaigns manager for a range of organisations from the Country Landowner’s Association (CLA) to the London Chamber of Commerce and the British Retail Consortium. Her experience of countryside issues and business make her an ideal person to represent Diss at the District Council.

She then spent a couple of years working for a Government Department, where her roles included working for a Minister in the healthcare field.

She has worked with businesses in both rural and urban areas and hopes to be able to bring this experience to her role in local issues.

She has now stopped commuting to London and is looking forward to playing a role in local politics and representing the residents of Diss. Locally she is involved with the “Homewatch” scheme in her area. She is keen to ensure that the voice of local people is heard in the council chamber and that their concerns are properly addressed.

Her interests include skiing (usually in Austria), hiking and, on a less energetic level, opera and classical music. She has also been involved in a book group.
